MIAMI — Florida ranks as the No. 4 growth state in 2024, according to the U-Haul Growth Index, which tracks one-way customer transactions. This marks the 10th consecutive year that Florida has been in the top four, reflecting its sustained appeal as a relocation destination.
Florida previously held the No. 2 spot from 2021-2023 and was ranked No. 1 in 2019. However, South Carolina has climbed three positions to claim the top spot this year, overtaking Texas.
Florida’s Relocation Trends
U-Haul data shows that 50.4% of moving traffic into and out of Florida was inbound, with 49.6% departing. Though U-Haul arrivals to Florida dipped by 1% year-over-year and departures decreased by 0.5%, Florida still achieved the fourth-largest net gain of U-Haul movers in 2024.
The U-Haul Growth Index is based on over 2.5 million one-way transactions across the U.S. and Canada, measuring states’ net gains or losses in moving traffic.
Why Florida?
According to Mario Martinez, U-Haul Area District Vice President, Florida continues to attract residents from the Northeast due to its:
No state income tax.
Year-round warm weather and beaches.
Abundance of job opportunities.
Family-friendly lifestyle and amenities.
“Many young professionals and families are moving here for the lifestyle and career options,” Martinez said. “The state’s growing economy, fueled by large companies like Amazon and Walmart, is creating opportunities for newcomers.”
